Asphalt shingle replacement starts with the wind class

Asphalt shingles are classified by how they behave in a standardized wind test. The residential code requires them to be tested to ASTM D3161 or ASTM D7158 and to meet the classification appropriate to the ultimate design wind speed at the building. D3161 uses classes A, D and F; D7158 uses classes D, G and H. Higher letter, higher tested speed. What the classification describes is a shingle installed the way the test installs it — which is where most of the real-world difference comes from.

That is why the same shingle can be a good roof on one house and a poor one two streets away. The product carries a rating. The roof earns it, through the nailing pattern, the starter course and the edge detail. On the Ocean County shore, where a west wind off Barnegat Bay or an easterly over the peninsula arrives with nothing in front of it, the gap between rating and installation is the whole story.

Where the site value comes from

New Jersey used to publish design load values in departmental bulletins. Bulletin 19-1, issued in September 2019 and revised in September 2022, consolidated the ground snow, wind and seismic bulletins and replaced the tables with a pointer to a site-specific hazard lookup. The bulletin warns in plain language that supplying only a city and state or a ZIP code returns the value for the centroid of that area and could understate the value that should be used for the site of interest.

In a township like Toms River, which runs from inland North Dover out to Ortley Beach on the barrier, that caveat is not a technicality. A ZIP-level value averages across positions that are genuinely different, and the address on the peninsula is the one that loses by it.

What the coast does to the surface

Salt aerosol carries well inland on the same onshore wind that brings the rain, and because salt is hygroscopic it draws moisture out of the air and holds it against the shingle. The surface stays damp for longer between rains than the same surface would inland, which is enough for Gloeocapsa magma to establish on slopes that do not get direct sun. That is the source of the dark vertical streaking on north-facing roofs from Beachwood through Point Pleasant.

The streaks themselves are cosmetic. What is not cosmetic is what happens underneath: the growth loosens granules, and granules are the shingle's protection from ultraviolet light. Once bare asphalt is exposed it ages quickly. Copper-bearing algae-resistant granules suppress the growth for years and are worth specifying on this coast, but they treat the symptom rather than the exposure.

Architectural or three-tab?
Three-tab is lighter, thinner and single-layer, and it is largely gone from new work. Architectural — laminated — shingles carry two bonded layers, weigh more, and are what current wind classifications are generally built around. The choice matters less than the installation: an architectural shingle nailed above the nailing zone performs worse than a three-tab nailed correctly.
Do algae-resistant granules actually do anything?
They slow the streaking. The dark stains on a north slope are Gloeocapsa magma feeding on the limestone filler in the shingle, and copper-bearing granules leach slowly enough to suppress it for years. On the coast, where salt keeps the surface damp between rains, that suppression is more useful than it is inland. It is a cosmetic benefit rather than a structural one, and it does not extend the shingle's service life on its own.
How long should a shingle roof last on the shore?
Less than the figure printed on the wrapper.
